IMP Rules

The International Mixtape Project is a growing community of music lovers who exchange homemade compilation tapes and CDs with likeminded folks around the globe. Every month, each active IMP member is assigned the name and address of another member somewhere else in the world. The rest is simple: Send an awesome mix...Receive an awesome mix!

Month by month, members build a library of mixtapes and CD-Rs from some of the 1200 IMP members in 30 countries on six continents. Each member also controls a personal profile webpage within the IMP online community. IMP members can update their online profiles to match their musical interests, post original tracklists and cover art, comment on the mixes they've received from other IMP members, write blogs, and contribute to featured articles about music and mixtaping.

Monthly Mixtape Exchange

Assignments are automatically generated from a database of active members and delivered via e-mail during the first week of every month. With each assignment, participants have until the end of the month to send a mix to their assigned recipients. Members are encouraged to send their mixes during the early part of the month, since international mail can take a few weeks for delivery.

Every mix must be labeled with the month and year, some indication that it is an IMP mix, and the sender's name and e-mail address. Mixes must be sent in a protective slip or case of some sort. A tracklist including song names and artist names must also be included. Cover art is not required but is certainly encouraged. Recipients are highly encouraged to contact their monthly senders via e-mail with thanks and to confirm that the mixes have arrived.

Mixes need not be new from month to month, meaning that the same mix can be sent by a single active participant for every monthly assignment. Mixes may be thematic or random or anything the mixer likes. That's the beauty of IMP! However, each mix must be made by the IMP member that sends it, and no mix may be a copy of a retail compilation or a copy of a mix received from another IMP member.

Your IMP Profile

In addition to enrollment in the International Mixtape Project, each new member receives a username and password to access an online profile page, which is used to manage and administrate the IMP membership. IMP members can log in to the password-protected section of the website to update contact and mailing information, change profile details like favorite music, upload photos, add mixtape tracklists and cover art, and post blogs. Most importantly, each IMP member can use the profile page to correspond with other IMP members and the IMP Administrator.

IMP members will each be assigned a URL address so that they can share their online profile pages with their friends, regardless of whether their friends are IMP members. IMP profiles remain live for all IMP members, whether active or inactive, unless members abuse the IMP rules. IMP members may not post profanity, pornography, or copyrighted content to their IMP profiles.

On the IMP profile management page, each active member can also track current and past mixtape assignments. Each active member's profile management page has buttons for reporting the status of mixtapes received and sent. On the tenth day of every month, each active member's profile is updated with buttons to report the arrival status of the previous month's mix. Members have until the twenty-second day of the month to report the previous month's mix missing. If a recipient reports a mix missing, the sender is prompted to log in to the IMP profile management page and report the status of the missing mix using a separate set of buttons. IMP recipients whose senders do not report the status of missing mixes will be sent replacement mixes by the IMP Administrator or an IMP Affiliate.

Deactivations, Reactivations, and Renewals

Active IMP mixtape exchange participants may quit at any time by clicking the Deactivate button on their IMP profile management page, as long as they have sent all assigned mixes. No refunds are available.

Inactive IMP members may join the mixtape exchange at any time by clicking the Reactivate button on their IMP profile management page and following the re-enrollment instructions.

Active IMP members will be given the opportunity to extend their participation in the mixtape exchange during the last month of their enrollment by clicking the Renew button on the IMP profile management page.

IMP members who fail to respond to missing mix solicitations will be automatically deactivated from the monthly mixtape exchange. IMP members who repeatedly send their mixes late will be automatically deactivated from the monthly mixtape exchange. All deactivations are automatic and fully at the discretion of the IMP Administrator.
