NFR LIVE!

Meatbreak - 2007-04-17 04:27:05

It finally happened!!!

Thank you to everyone that came to our inaugural NFR LIVE at the Greenhouse Effect last night (See! I told you it wasn't that far!). And thanks for all your words of encouragement about the venue and the night. Awww , you guys! Jez has put a seriously heavy amount of work into getting the place looking and sounding as good as it did and our first night jitters were totally blown away by the atmosphere and everyone's reactions.

Thanks most of all though to the bands who really made the first night go off in the best way possible.

Girls From Egypt opened their set with frontman Scottish Mike announcing they were and were not girls from Egypt, which is true. But also false. Their set of spiralling harmonies and heavy bouts of punchy choruses was a great way to start things off. Alvaro's shredding guitar work provided a fierce foil for the gentler melodic sections, with Spanish Mike's nimble bass and Mark keeping it tight and driven on drums, grinding out harmonic garage rock that skewed into discordance and back to beauty as quickly as the audience could keep up.

Lords Spiritual played as a two piece with Jim on acoustic guitar and Alex on bass; dual vocals - simple and effective. Their set of heady harmonic drone full of bass pulse and soaring harmonies kept the energy of Girls From Egypt going but took the night into a different space of timeless psychedelia. With subject matter such as losing minds, finding ones place in time and space accompanying the delirious humming of strings they came across like shamans conducting a cosmic sonic ritual trance-out. Can't wait to see them electrified with a full band - a very exciting prospect that will be fulfilled on 10th May at the Pressure Point, if not before.

Loud and propulsive, teetering on the brink of chaos but keeping it tightly locked down with hooks strapped to nuclear synth lines, who better to headline our first night than Coin-Op? From the first moment the keyboards and drums came blasting out of the speakers everyone totally flipped then the guitars came in and blew what was left of our minds away. Nicks vocals sat perfectly inside the sound of the instruments, backed up by the other three members like a psychotic Futureheads, occasionally leaping out liked barbed spears of intent over his savage, surging keyboards; Tom's chops and effects work has to be some of the best guitar work in town, while Iain's frantic, solid dance-floor targeted drumming and Craig's deft mix of sharp angular and long looping bass lines held everything at a tempo and rhythm demanding every muscle to twitches in response. A seriously good band that you need to be seeing as soon as. They play the Hope on Tuesday, which is handy.

We danced on into the night with me and Fokka Wolfe at the decks doing our damndest to keep the adrenaline buzzing with tunes from the likes of The Pink Mountaintops, The Flesh Happening, Of Montreal, The Horrors, Surkin, Radioclit, Wooden Shjips, Crystal Castles, Bonde De Role, Chow Chow, Adult., Cansei De Ser Sexy, Electrelane, Six by Seven, Rodion, Holy Fuck, The Cleft Palattes, The Black Ghosts, Digitalism, Outhud, Klaxons, Joakim, Fly Pan Am, Bolt Action Five...I could go on, but I think it's probably best if you come down and find out for yourselves.

Stay posted for news of bands for the next NFR LIVE on the 11th May when things will be even bigger and better!

See you sooner on the 25th April for NFR at Fitzherberts.
