Mixtapes

My Funky World!

Some of my favorite groovy tracks from around the world and around the corner.

SCIENTIFIC MADNESS-TAPE

A tape for my cousin James, studying organic chemistry. The mix is divided into the scientific process (as I like to imagine it in music): 1 = Question 2 = Hypothesis 3 - 10 = Procedure 11 - 14 = Data 15 = Discovery! 16 = Conclusion Extremely random, but somehow satisfying?

Bird Songs

Here's my little compilation of songs somehow related to those wonderful flying things we call birds. Jazz people (perhaps stemming from "the Bird" himself) seem to have popped up the most, though I'm sure there are tons of songs from other realms that I just don't have access to. Maybe I'll keep adding to it (with your suggestions?). Enjoy! (I usually avoid two of the same artist on one mix, but since one's John and one's Paul, the Beatles' songs here are fine)

McRae's Jazz 2nd Edition

Here continues my exploration of jazz through my music teacher, McRae. Enjoy! I know I am, seeing that up until now I only had Coltrane's A Love Supreme, and now I have about 20 or so albums...I've definetly become a better jazz player and I've found a lot of really excellent music through this! (To think! I used to find jazz boring...).

Jazz I Stole From McRae

I suddenly realized one day that if I was ever was going to be any good at playing, I'd better start listening to it. So I started listening to the collection of my band director, McRae, and obtaining what I liked. These are some of the highlights.

Bom Mesmo!

Short 'n sweet mix of some of my favorite songs coming from our Portuguese- speaking neighbors to the South.

Under 2 Minutes

A mixtape made up of all songs that last less than two minutes. Not only does this mixtape show the frank simplicity of songs that pull back the reigns on excessive exploration, but it also amazingly covers most of my favorite artists/genres/music al interests. (

"He Who Carries Death In His Pouch"

"He who carries death in his pouch" is a mixtape that is meant to serve as an introduction to the amazing music of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Nigerian musician who invented Afrobeat, a combination of jazz, funk, and traditional Nigerian music. Fela was a prolific composer who recorded over sixty albums in his life and was also very active in protesting against the corrupt military dictatorships of Nigeria. Check him out! I highly suggest reading about his life and listening to his music, even if you don't end up getting this 2-CD mix.

Os Mutantes: A Collection of Lesser Known Classics

Haven't actually sent this to anybody, but I plan on it...I guess you could say it's on deck. Great Brazilian band from the 60s and 70s, majorly influenced by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the rest of British Invasion/Psychedelia , yet with an interesting touch of Brazilian music and overall bizarrity...Many may have heard the famous Everything Is Possible from the Luaka Bop label, assumedly compiled by David Byrne himself. That's a great bunch of songs, but I figured I'd bring out a bunch of their even crazier, more trippy and less well known stuff. enjoy!

Llama

Haven't put a mix online in a bit but here's June's. The starting outline was that fuzzy ass guitar/synthesizer sound, but no one's perfect.

Songs for Staring

A Wandering Mix for an Unplanned Day

Random indeed!

April arrived. Thanks.

Bruce

Hello. Still no April mix in my mailbox. Is it on the way?

Ron

glad you like it joe! i use mixmeister software. it allows you to beat match songs, change the bpm, etc. takes a little learning, but it's pretty easy to pick it up. just finished putting together a slammin' techno cd if you're into that....

Aubrey

You are totally amazing....check that mailbox for a thank you.

Hey Joe, Still loving that Os Mutantes mix. You know anything about Orlann Divo? I took a flyer on a disc called A Chave Do Sucesso and not only is it the kind of thing that's not only right up my street, but it's knocking on my door and poking it's head through the mail slot to see if I'm home. Check it out if you can get your hands on it or let me know if you would like to hear some of it. Best, Steve.

David

Got your cd's man. Thanks a lot. I'm really enjoying the Os Mutantes stuff. Your's are in the mail.

Alex

Joe, there's a gayly-coloured June mixtape coming your way. Let me know when it hits you. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait. I didn't have a look at your musical tastes before I sent it, but there's a Caetano Veloso track on there, so... hurrah!

David

Yeah, man. Looking forward to whatever you send. My email address is dhaw@persona.ca. Contact me and we'll exhange snail mail.

Steve

contact me at smedd1@comcast.net. Thanks. Steve

Steve

Hey Joe, Love the look of your Os Mutantes mix. If you're interested in any of my mixes, I'd love to work out a side trade. Either way, nice work on this one. Steve

Cornelius

Oooooh Joe! I gots ta tell ya...OS Mutantes are so psychedelic they're from the 14th Dimension. It's like everyone else in psychedellia ( 'mericans and Brits) were only trying to sound like the Stones, the Beatles, or the Byrds. Very catchy stuff for sure but...one hit wonderville. Os Mutantes have all the buzzy trippy guitar tricks and the reverb and the great harmonies BUT...they take all that sh!t and throw it out the spaceship window. All of a sudden a song stops and a dimensional vortex opens up in my ears and some crazy sound or vocal or random noise comes through, then they pick up the pieces and but the song back together with banjos. What a trip man. Thank you very much!

Cornelius

Man I would love to do a side trade with you. Oz Mutantes sound incredible. Here's me email addy: intruderalert@hotmail.com

Cornelius

THAT line-up on "songs for staring". Fantastic. Heavy pieces to digest some of them.

Katie

Hi Joe this is Katie-- I sent your IMP mix for March, please let me know if you still haven't received it. I am travelling until May 1st and will re-send as soon as I return if you haven't gotten it. Thanks!
