my mixes where i limit myself to about five artists stem from the use of a 5 cd changer. you're forced to pick five things you want to hear either in sequence or shuffled together so it reflects your mood at the time. when i used to make mixtapes on actual tape i'd load it and maybe i'd already have a song or two on each album that i wanted to use plus i liked how the sound of each artist would blend or contrast with the others in different combinations so i'd continue til i had a side of the tape done before reloading. with itunes i'll make an initial playlist out of a limited selection and then build my mixtape from that. it's like choosing a color scheme. the nice thing about itunes or whatever is that you can just rearrange the order if two songs are jarring next to each other.

David

i'm your december person. just burned it and it will be in the mail shortly.

Steve

Hey Cal, I got your September mix and it's great. Really enjoying stuff I just didn't know was out there. Thanks. Steve.

David

Hey Cal: Got the March mix. Good one......listening to it right now as I type this. I was going to say it was a little thin on the number of song until I saw how long the; "Lay For June" track is. I particularly like the Chelsea Wolfe track, and the Staple Singers and Stevie songs. Thanks.

John

Thanks for your kind words re: mix I sent you. Glad you enjoyed the hot jazz. I enjoyed your mix, too!

David

your january mix will be in the mail as soon as i remember to buy padded envelopes.

David

Hi Cal: Got your Nov. mix in the mail today. Great job. I really enjoyed this one. You're right the only ones I knew other than Otis and ? was Death Grips (strange to say). I really liked the variety on this one. Stand out tracks were Tortilla The Hun and Tomato Cave. Thanks

Walter

Hi Cal, your June mix left Sydney today (June 16th).

christopher

HI.... Your May 2103 Mix is going in the post today. Sorry for the delay.

David

Sorry for the delay, but your mix is in the mail. No really...

David

Cal; your my assignment this month and after looking at your mixes, favourites and concerts I'm feeling....a little humbled. It's going to be hard to put something together for you that you don't probably already know. But we'll give it a shot.

ANDY

Hey Cal, I am sending out your May Mix tomorrow - keep a lookout for it.. I hope you enjoy it! Please let me know when you receive it..

*Martin

Amy

Cal! Howdy. I am so sorry for the late mix in May! I am putting it in the mail manana. Hope you enjoy it. Cheers!

Tim

Well, hopefully I've reversed the trend and your mix will be on time. It was sent out Monday, hope you enjoy it.

Ian

And I'll say that the Asva album IS impenetrable; that's why it's great...

Ian

Hey, glad to hear you liked the article. I hope the year's looking up for you, at least. I know when I started my day job (doing something that I really enjoy) I hated it, and for a while I struggled with it. I couldn't decide whether the part of me that liked the money and stability was giving up on the prospect of leading an interesting life, or if the part of me that hated the lack of free time and energy was just being juvenile (or to put it to myself more bluntly: everyone else has day jobs, what makes YOU so special?). It's something I still think about way too much. But anyway, I'm glad it reached someone else in a similar situation. Since writing it I've actually found that I seem to have some of my old energy back, and I'm getting a bit more writing done. I'm sure things will sort themselves out for you, one way or another...

Monica

Cal, I'm having major computer problems right now that are taking way longer than I expected to fix. So it's quite likely that your third mix in a row will be late. Sorry about that!

Adrian

Hey, guess what... your October mix is going to be late too! Sending it out today, hope you like it. All the best, Adrian.

Evangeline

Hey Cal, this month's mix is going to be late. Sorry! I'll try to get it to you as soon as I can.

Kavokei

Hey Cal! Thanks for my August mix, just arrived yesterday - I've been listening to it in the car, and it's up there with the replacement mixes you've sent. Can't beat a few Brew City tunes thrown in for good measure - always appreciated! I'm a bit concerned that your copy my mix hasn't arrived (there was a bonus CD in there as well) - I'll send you another copy, along with my IMP for this month. It's titled 'ayeTunes' - just a small selection from the immense volume of quality music coming out of Scotland at the moment (I was going to send you a copy anyway). Hope you enjoy!

Robert

I am sorry to say that I have completely spaced IMP this month (meaning August). I have something for you which I put together early on and even road-tested. I will get it into the mail as soon as I can. I apologize for the lack.

Joshua

Hey, i got the May 'replacement mix" you sent. Love it. Sorry it took so long to reply. :)

Cornelius

My main man Cal Roach! Thank you for the mix disc, it's always a pleasure to receive an I>M>Py care package from you my friend. In answer to your query, nope you didn't double me up on any songs. I love the Milwaukee collection. I'm sending you a RENO mix I'm pretty proud of. Take care man!

*Martin

Such kind words! Thanks for your feedback Cal ... I must admit, it was tricky to find something that I thought could work for you. But, once I got started I really got into a groove with it. So glad you liked it - and top 5? I'm honored :)

johannes

hi there, i received your replacement mixtape two weeks ago and it's nice to get something different to the usual "arcade fire"-"death cab for cutie"-younameit stuff. i don't even know one single band that you put on that tape but i like it a lot. thanks!

Richard

Cal, I'm sending you the mix for this month but......I'm way behind so it's going to be a little late. Sorry, hope you think it's worth it

Shelly

Hi Cal! Thanks for the replacement disc. I just got it yesterday and am really enjoying it. Thanks again - Shelly

Monica

Meatbreak

Wow man, "Liars with unlimited studio-time" is probably the greatest compliment I could ever receive!!! Thanks! Except my wife doesn't think so because she hates Liars. crazy lady. I have a load of demo-ey stuff which I am planning on recording up soonish, hopefully, so more meat-tunes on the way. I enjoyed your 2007 albums run down. I've read a few things about that Fog band and I should really get on and listen to them soon. have you got the december NFR mix yet? Here's January's anyway, haha: www.sendspace.com/file/cge8z4. Look out for Tayside Mental Health - crazy girls from Soctland. Scary!

Kristian

Hi cal. Glad you liked the mix, thanks for getting back to me. your comments were well recieved. Happy new year.

Meatbreak

Hey Cal. How's you '08 going? Mine's pretty made up since I broke in the new year listening to Black Mountain's new album. Amazing! Truly. I'm eager to see your best of lists for last year, I'm sure there'll be interesting thoughts on stuff I haven't considered. I now there was last year. No Jesu? Yeah, I guess - I think the Alcest album pretty much sewed up modern shoegaze for me but the Jesu albums have a bit more weight behind them....aaaanyways, speak soon! D.

Kristian

did the Dec Cd arrive yet? i hope it did and you like it.

Meatbreak

Hi Cal. How did you like the rest of my top 50? Anything controversial/surprising turn up? Here's the link to download decembers Not For Resale mix: http://www.sendspace.com/file/6h3r3v Hope you like this one, I'm pretty pleased with it. happy holidays! MxBx

Meatbreak

Aw crap! Did not reply to you? I was sure I did, but maybe I dreamt that too. That festival thing was very amusing indeed. Good fun, but it was like someone lifted the bonnet of the BBC up and I got to see all the inner workings and what a terrible state of affairs 'alternative radio' is in. I was pretty pleased with my set though and what got played on the radio as a result. Will talk more in the Xmas gift that will be winging it's way to you soon. MxBx

Meatbreak

Hi Cal. I'm starting my top 50 albums rundown on my myspazz blog if yr interested. I now understand what it means to say 'it's been a very good year'. MxBx

Kristian

Cd Done for december shall be winging its way to the cheese state any day now.11th or 12 th.

Droog

ja, apologies for not getting back to you sooner- been really busy this month- thanks for the mix and bonus cd- am enjoying as we speak, so to speak.. :-) much joy & good karma to you & yours.....

Electramummy

Hi Cal I see your question on my page. The only thing I can guess is that you don't have "audio cd" selected. When mp3 is the type of disc you have selected to burn, you don't have the option to add text, because it does it for you automatically. The only OTHER thing I can think is that you possible have an older version of iTunes. The fact that you have it available to you at all though (and it is greyed out) must mean you can utilize it. I would double check to see that you have checked the AUDIO cd. If you are in fact sending people mp3 discs (with likely more music) kudos to your efforts, and the discs should be labeled. Hope this helped. EM

Cal, so glad you liked it. After reading your list of favorites, I'm hoping I show up on your send list someday...

Meatbreak

Hey Cal. Thanks for the tip on Secret Chiefs - wonderful! All over the place but restrained at the same time. The filmic score bits are incredible. very impressive. the New Tomahawk stuff is quite similar actually, though more American roots than orchestral so I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Meatbreak

Hey Cal. yeah yeah, I was quite pleased with myself coming up with that for a mix idea. You're welcome to 'steal' it if you want! In fact, I'd like to see other peoples versions of it. Have you heard the new Tomahawk album? That's something pretty different too.

hi again cal, i havent been v lucky this year, didn't get january, March or April mixes (maybe the postman knows i'm shagging his wife)- if you could send another March it would be much appreciated, sounds like a good line-up cheers me dears drooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooog

Your profile and list of mixes exhausts me - which of course I mean as a compliment! :

hey brah, thanks for the comments. i've seen post-PHiSH trey many times in many incarnations and each time it evokes something different in me. i guess it has to do with how prevalent his addictions are at the time. all in all though i'd rather see Trey over most other artists, but compared to the high The Boyz gave off it's no comparison. i will fly anywhere or pay anything for one more show (3 sets, of course) although i'd prefer never to camp again. as for the hip hop mix; having seen 2 Sabotages, Jiggy and Girls Girls Girls I think it's best we just let sleeping dogs lie. thanks for reading, keep mixin.

Amesoeurs. Sorry. Awkward word.

Meatbreak

Brilliant. I'm so glad you like it. I spent half of last year spewing fawning rhetoric at anyone within range. It really isn't like any other album, which is a bold statement right enough, but it has so many different elements playing with such cohesive focus you have to give up referencing it and accept that it's just blowing your mind on its own terms. It's similar to the Agalloch album, in that the only aspect that keeps it within the Metal sphere is the vocals, other than that it should really have a much broader appeal, but people won't get to know. If the songs weren't so long I'd have been putting it on every mixdisc I make. Check out Amesoers 'Ruines Humaines' as well, for a similar approach.

I was your November 2006...interesting....and a few suprises! Just wanted to let you know that it was greatly appreciated...Thanks again!

Hey man, nice article, really. The more I read about olde-skoole mixtaping the sorrier I feel that I wasn't into it during the 'Maxell years'. But that's misplaced vicarious nostalgia. Roll on mp3 mixdiscing with 200 songs a CD. Maybe. Are we ready for that? That'll really make the brain ache trying create an overarching concept to cover that amount of space. I'm sure it's already started happening. So what was on The American Dream? Napalm Death, Whitehouse and Brighter Death Now?

Robert

Thanks for your appreciation. I tried an Oblivians album and it was just too raunchy for me: Jon Spencer without the hipster irony. I do like the original Psychobilly project with Eugene Chadbourne (one of the original pre-IMP mixtapers, dontcha know). John Fahey is on the short list of "Christmas music I will allow my wife to play in my presence." I try to expand it whenever I can: songs in French, in Latin, in Gaelic, by James Brown. I try, I really do. I love your 2006 mix: it's what, 3 CDs? I love that it doesn't overlap a whit with my 3 CD 2006 mix. With so much good music out there, how are we expected to have jobs?

I was tryin' to get you some more information on "MoonRock" from the original idea man, but alas, he is too stoned to answer my emails. Sooo...I'll shoot from the hip - Being a Psy-Spy thriller we needed a title that alluded to Roger Moore era bond movies. Your idea of a meteor from the moon landing on earth and being discovered by our hero / villian (thus giving them super psionic powers) is very valid. I'd like to say a pre-quel is in the works, but the Fiddler's Green production team broke up in the late 90's.

Cornelius

Cal, Dude, yer right...we had a hard time with a 63 year old J.C. UNTIL "The Temple" and he let out not just 1, but 2 super rockstar screams! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! (awesome) That sold me until the end when I had to look at his old body up on that cross. I was totally star struck with Corey as Judas. GREAT SHOW!

Meatbreak

Yeah, Wolves have been everywhere these last few years. Get the ones in the Throne Room and you won't be disappointed. The 'Mangler ones are pretty serious too. I enjoyed your top tracks on your mix too. Good stuff in there for sure.

Cornelius

Cal Roach the KING! I appreciate the replacement mix you sent me broddah!

This guy has saved my life more than once. Meeting Cal and Jen at the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago during the summer of 2006 was awesome. The kindness and coolness of IMPers around the world (even in Milwuakee, WI) never ceases to amaze me. Also, check out the diversity of his music taste: rollercoaster time, folks. Good on ya!
